Industry Jargon Used by Commercial Truck Drivers
The trucking industry is known for its unique traits, one of which is the language used to refer to various aspects of the job. Most jobs have their own jargon, so it’s important to dedicate yourself to learning the correct terminology as a new commercial truck driver so that you can better understand your coworkers, superiors, and clients.
Dispatcher
The dispatcher at a trucking company is responsible for communicating with drivers to let them know where to go and what to get. Certain dispatchers may even be fleet managers that perform many roles, while others are relegated to fewer tasks. Jobs that a dispatcher may do include freight assignments, filing, message relays, and providing informational reports to load planners.
Logbook
As a truck driver, you have to keep track of your duty status, including when you’re on-duty, off-duty, or sleeping. Traditionally, a logbook would have been a written journal, but today’s logbooks may be digital.
Terminal
This is the term for the facility out of which a commercial truck company operates its business. There may be several terminals spread across the country for a business in order to effectively serve all their drives. The terminal hosts a trailer drop-off lot, repair bay, washing facilities, and an office building.
