Personal Safety Tips For Diesel Truck Drivers
No matter who you are or how strong and brave you feel, being a diesel truck driver can put you at personal risk. Aside from the general risks of the road and of driving, you have to concern yourself with your safety whenever you stop for the night, whether you’re at a roadside motel, a truck stop, or simply pulled over in a parking lot to grab some shut-eye. Here are a few tips you can use to protect yourself while you’re on the road.
Know Your Surroundings
Wherever it is you choose to stop for the night, make sure you are aware of what’s around you, and more particularly, who’s around you. If you’re walking between your vehicle and a truck stop facility, be mindful of people who may be trying to follow you.
Avoid Rest Areas
One of the more dangerous places you can stop at night is a rest area off a highway exit. While these places will be frequented by travelers during the daylight hours, there won’t be many people there at night and those who are there may want to do you harm. Try to pull into an exit with a well-lit gas station or fast-food restaurant instead.
Stay Visible
Wherever it is you are, make sure that you yourself don’t drop into the shadows and can’t be seen by other drivers or staff. Stay under streetlamps wherever possible and try to park near other drivers in a well-lit and busy area. The closer you can get to the facilities you need to use, the better.
